Vaquita

Less than 10 species remaining in the whole world

Facts

Critically Endangered

The Vaquita is a small porpoise species that is native to the northern part of the Gulf of California in Mexico.

It is the smallest and rarest marine mammal in the world and is considered one of the most endangered cetacean species.

POPULATION
less than 10

SCIENTIFIC NAME
Phocoena sinus

HEIGHT
Up to 5 feet / 152.4 cm

WEIGHT
Up to 120 pounds / 54.43 kg

Main Threat

Vaquitas are threatened by entanglement in fishing gear and habitat loss, making conservation efforts critical to their survival.

There is still hope

Marine scientists have discovered some offspring in 2022. That means that the surving animals are reproducing.

Some thoughts on how to save them

Banning gillnets

One of the biggest threats to the Vaquita is entanglement in gillnets used for fishing. Banning these nets in the Vaquita's habitat is crucial for their survival.

Enforcing conservation laws

Effective enforcement of conservation laws and regulations is needed to prevent illegal fishing and protect the Vaquita's habitat.

Habitat protection

Protecting the Vaquita's habitat, including mangroves and estuaries, is crucial for their survival.

What WWF is doing

WWF has helped study vaquitas and implement protective measures with the Mexican government and local partners.

WF has called on the Mexican government to strongly enforce a ban on gillnet fisheries throughout the entire range of the species since September 2014.

WWF has also asked that the US and China help stamp out the illegal trade in totoaba products and provide enforcement support to the Mexican government
